NASHVILLE, TN, January 11, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Album Project Announcement "Prisoners Of The Blues" ---
Phil Brown & Stephen Foster kick off Album Fundraiser for "Prisoner Of The Blues" at IndieGoGo.
IndieGoGo Fundraiser Campaign: http://igg.me/at/PhilStephen/x/5822598
Prime Participants: Phil Brown, Guitars and Vocals; Stephen Foster: Keyboards, Guitars & Vocals.
This project delves deep into the roots of Blues in America, revisiting work chants and barracks stomps originally documented in the early 20th century by archivists (primarily Alan Lomax and Pete & Toshi Seeger) who went to the work prisons of the deep South, using primitive field recorders and hand-held microphones to document these quickly-disappearing musical treasures. Some of these songs have been arranged and covered by Rock bands such as Cream & Led Zeppelin, others by Folk acts like Delaney & Bonnie & Eric Clapton's "Unplugged" series. This album project will work with both styles. Psychedelic-style sessions are slated for SW Florida with Stephen Foster's "Howler" section. Acoustic sessions will be held in Nashville with Phil Brown and a combined group of some of the most famous players in that incredible music city. Another session to be held in Muscle Shoals, AL will include The Muscle Shoals Horns and other musicians responsible for the amazing string of R&B/Soul hits generated in the 60s, 70s & 80s by such classic singers as Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Clarence Carter, Percy Sledge and a host of other American music giants.
Getting these songs recorded and documented is a task of love for Foster, who worked as an arranger at Quinvy Studio in Muscle Shoals in the late 60s. Part of his job was to record and document songs brought into the studio's publishing company by field hands. Many of these songs were just chants, slow dreamy "Hoe chants" meant to keep a rhythm for the field workers as they hoed cotton. Other songs were "Stomps", sung in the prison barracks after hours to the accompaniment of stomping boots. These songs are quick and used to help release tension in the barracks.
Phil Brown comes to this honestly, searching for new avenues to experiment with his array of guitars and vocal styles. After years of working basically alone, Brown has found a kindred spirit in Foster, putting his amazing talents at the disposal of the project.
These two icons - Phil is known as an incredible guitarist/vocalist and songwriter for the stars - and Stephen, writer/producer/singer of "The Mighty Field of Vision Anthem" and a string of Blues hits over the last 15 years - are collaborating on this project. Cameo appearances by an array of famous musicians will round out the effort. So far, appearances are slated by members of Jeff Beck's band, Joe Walsh, The Muscle Shoals Horns, Little Feat, etc.
The sessions will be done in 3 cities: Venice, FL, Nashville, TN, and Muscle Shoals, AL. Hit studios will be used and all are giving discount rates because of the direction of the project. Regardless, these sessions will cost money, as will the mixing time and mastering. Names of the studios and session dates will be announced. We need funds to pay for session time and session musicians.
All investors in the project will get a percentage of 50% of all proceeds from album sales, global downloads, TV & Film placement, performance royalties and direct-to-fan special download packages. Your percentage will be a direct reflection of the amount you invest. All investors will be listed as "Executive Producers", named on the album credits, and given access to the out-takes and other background material generated by the sessions. Donations from all funding will go to St Judes.
Very few examples of this kind of music exist worldwide. Archivists and scholars will no doubt be extremely interested in the collection. Radio is already interested, and selections will be released to global radio in an orderly manner
