-- Phoenix's status as a large, crowded city means there are the typical traffic risks for big metropolitan areas. According to Yahoo!, Phoenix is one of the U.S.'s top ten cities for bad drivers. People driving in the city have a two percent higher chance of getting in an accident than the national average. This might not seem like too much of a risk, but statistics reported by the Arizona Department of Transportation put it into better perspective: in 2012, there were a staggering 30,662 automobile crashes
in Phoenix alone. Out of those, 146 accidents resulted in fatalities, while 10,363 crashes involved personal injury.
Common causes for accidents in Phoenix
The Century Council reports that drunk driving has been one of the most common causes of car accidents in the U.S. for years. About 30 percent of fatal accidents are attributed to drunk drivers. There were 215 alcohol-impaired deaths in Arizona in 2011.
To highlight this point, a recent accident in Phoenix tragically resulted in the deaths of two women, after a man sped through a red light and crashed into their car. The driver who caused the wreck was suspected to have been driving under the influence, says My Fox Phoenix.
While drunk driving accidents are very common, another cause
for crashes is quickly becoming an epidemic, reports the Centers for Disease Control. About one in every five crashes today is due to a distracted driver. Especially dangerous is texting and driving, because it takes the driver's manual, visual and cognitive attention away from the road for several seconds at a time. Teenagers and inexperienced drivers are most at risk of both causing and becoming victims of distracted driving accidents.
Contacting an attorney
Being vigilant and driving defensively can only protect you so much. It's an unfortunate fact that at any given time you can be sharing the road with an impaired, reckless or negligent driver. It's not always possible to prevent an accident even with the best driving practices. People who have been injured in an accident can face high medical expenses along with lengthy recovery times and even a loss of income from being unable to work.
If you've been injured in an accident or have a loved one who was hurt or killed by another driver's negligence, it's important to contact an experienced personal injury attorney right away. Accident victims have rights, which can include the compensation of medical or funeral expenses, pain and suffering and loss of income.
