RALEIGH, NC, December 12, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The John William Pope Foundation has announced $802,500 in giving to community charities, schools, churches, and the arts bringing the Foundation's total giving to humanitarian and arts organizations in 2013 to over $1 million.

"We're honored to continue supporting these valuable community nonprofits that help the most vulnerable among us and that enrich our lives through education and the creative arts," said Art Pope, President and Chairman of the John William Pope Foundation.

The new grants are in addition to $200,000 in direct support to soup kitchens, homeless shelters, medical missions, and other organizations given by the Pope Foundation since July. Of that number, $185,000 were accelerated grants meant to mitigate the effects of the federal government shutdown that spanned the first half of October.

With the December 2013 cycle of grants, the Pope Foundation added seven new charities to its grantee list:

CORRAL Riding Academy: A horseback riding program designed to promote healing, growth, and
lasting change for low-income, at-risk girls in Wake County.

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation: A grant-making foundation that helps horses by
funding veterinary research at universities throughout North America and beyond.

Jobs for Life: A ministry that provides toolkits to churches and community nonprofits to help the
unemployed find work.

N.C. Museum of Art: Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, a museum that features an extensive art
collection, educational programs throughout the year, an art conservation studio, and a 160-acre park
open to the public.

Raleigh Little Theatre: A community theatre that enriches, entertains, and engages volunteers,
students, and audiences of all ages.

Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill: A "home away from home" for families of children who are
receiving health care at area hospitals. The House offers physical comfort and emotional support
through programs dedicated to the well-being of the whole family.

Thoroughbred Charities of America: A nonprofit whose mission is to provide a better life for
thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers.

Since its founding in 1986, the Pope Foundation has given millions to humanitarian charities, mainly in Wake County and adjacent regions.
