Prompt Proofing Reviews 'Wild' by Cheryl Strayed

The book, by Cheryl Strayed, has recently been made into a motion picture starring Reese Witherspoon.

VANCOUVER, BC, February 28, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On the surface, Wild chronicles Cheryl Strayed's three-month solitary hike along the Pacific Crest Trail; however, as her journey progresses, we gradually learn more about Cheryl's troubled past and the events that drove her to pursue this particular quest. For Cheryl, the epic journey is not only an extreme physical challenge but a way for her to come to terms with her personal demons. She has recently lost her mother and amicably divorced her husband - among other issues. It seems trite to see the journey as a metaphor but one can hardly avoid seeing Cheryl's emotional development and rapidly increasing self-reliance mirrored in her personal life.

At the beginning of her journey, Cheryl is appallingly ill prepared, attempting to carry a pack - aptly named 'the Monster' - that is too heavy for her to even lift an inch off the ground. (For those looking for symbolism, we also discover that her personal life is a complete mess at this point.) The hardships of the trail are vividly portrayed through this memoir, probably causing most readers to wonder why any sane person would even consider such an enterprise, much less carry it through. Cheryl encounters bears, rattlesnakes, ants and - in a scene that provides nightmare fodder for years to come - hundreds of tiny black frogs covering her as she sleeps. She loses toenails (ill-fitting boots), she battles heat, thirst and extreme cold and is perpetually broke and reliant on the kindness of strangers - something which, fortunately, is readily available.

Cheryl also encounters travelling companions with whom she forms close connections and who give her support and encouragement. Despite these companions, Cheryl's passion is to complete the hike alone - the solitude she enjoys on the trail is vital to her.

This amazing story shows us the incredible beauty of the American wilderness - along with its constant hazards - while keeping us eager to discover the next part of Cheryl's history, slowly revealed to us throughout the journey. Definitely recommended!
