Realityworks Celebrates Drop In Teen Pregnancy Rate and Supports Maternal and Child Health

Realityworks rewards education by awarding a scholarship in partnership with Go Beyond.

EAU CLAIRE, WI, February 03, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Since the company's inception 18 years ago, Realityworks , Inc. has had a vision of reducing unplanned and unwanted pregnancies, improving child health and reducing child abuse through the integration of their infant simulators and other demonstrators into Maternal and Child Health (MCH) and education programs. With The Total Parenting Experience including the award-winning RealCare Baby, in 62 percent of U.S. schools, Realityworks has reached over six million students and helped create a drastic drop in teen pregnancies.

The Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP) has worked diligently toward the vision of teen pregnancy reductions as well. They recently held their 2014 annual AMCHP Conference in Washington, DC from January 25th to 28th where MCH leaders gathered to collaborate on innovative ways to improve the overall health of women, children, youth and families. During the conference AMCHP leaders indorsed the 52 percent drop in teen pregnancy throughout the last two decades recognizing countless programs devoted to this cause. The conference hosted hundreds of MCH leaders for an interactive event where they focused the road ahead with its challenges, opportunities and changes to come regarding MCH issues.

The vision of AMCHP and Realityworks cannot be realized without rewarding the committed work that emerging leaders do within their arenas. It is with this thought that Realityworks has partnered with Go Beyond MCH for the third year to award an outstanding associate in the MCH sector with the Realityworks and Go Beyond MCH Graduate Student Scholarship. The objective of this scholarship is to support graduate students earning degrees in MCH by assisting in tuition expenses and sponsoring attendance at the AMCHP Annual Conference. This sponsorship both furthers their education and gives them a forum and opportunities to learn and network with MCH professionals and families nationally. Candidates must be working toward a graduate degree at a master or doctoral levels with a MCH focus, and be an active participant in public and/or community service activities.

"By partnering with AMCHP, collectively we are able to do our part in supporting and recognizing this most important profession and more importantly, a student who has shown promise and potential for leadership in order to further the future of this field," said Timm Boettcher, President of Realityworks.

This year's scholarship has been awarded to Avanthi Jayasuriya, a second-year MCH student from the University of Washington. She has been interested in MCH since high school, when she worked as a camp counselor. She also spent a year with AmeriCorps Seattle, running the Reach Out & Read program. Jayasuriya realized her passion for MCH while working with a non-profit group to raise awareness and funding for recreational physical therapy for children with disabilities. Her future plans are to work in early childhood development while earning her PhD.

The Total Parenting Experience walks participants through critical skills that address pregnancy, substance use while a baby is in utero, infant care skills and Shaken Baby Syndrome. Each stage of TPE has a curriculum and hands-on learning component to help bring lessons to life. The components include a Pregnancy Profile vest to simulate the third trimester of pregnancy, models of infant's affected by drugs and alcohol, a computerized infant simulator knows as the RealCare Baby 3 and a Shaken Baby Syndrome infant simulator.
