/Worldwide Who's Who/ -- Rita Atkins-Baylor, a nursing supervisor at Baptist Easley Hospital, was recently named a VIP member of Worldwide Who's Who. This special distinction honors individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to achieving personal and professional success.
She has 34 years of experience in nursing, with 11 years of experience as a nursing supervisor for Baptist Easley Hospital. She became involved in her profession because from the age of 5 years old, she knew that she wanted to be a nurse. Her parents wanted her to be a teacher and when she started teaching nursing, she realized her dream. She is responsible for assisting in the administration of the total nursing division by participating in operational decisions and implementing changes. She also acts as a liaison between nursing departments, physicians, ancillary departments, hospital administration and the community. In addition, she coordinates patient requirements for nursing care with available nursing resources in collaboration with designated admission personnel.
Even though Mrs. Atkins-Baylor is currently working in Nursing Administration, most of her nursing career has been spent in Nursing Education. In 1980, Ms. Atkins-Baylor assisted with the overall development of a new LPN program for Spartanburg Technical College. She also developed and taught two courses: Cardiovascular Nursing and Perioperative Nursing. In 1992, she redesigned two courses at Goshen College: Adult Health Nursing and Perioperative Nursing. In 1997, she redesigned the Community Health Nursing course for Goshen.
In addition to teaching in the three courses above, she also taught several other courses in Goshen's traditional BSN program. In addition she taught Research I and Research II in the RN to BSN program and co-taught a course entitled Cross Cultural Nursing. Mrs. Atkins-Baylor is certified and has taught in all areas of nursing with the exception of pediatrics and psychiatric nursing. The highlight of her career was in 1993, when she was invited to the International Scientific Nursing Congress (Referred Presentation) in Alexandria, Egypt.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Science from Ball State University and completed post master's work in curriculum development and program evaluation at Purdue University.
In 1996 she received the Excellence in Nursing Education award from the Beta Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. In 2008, she was nominated by her students at Clemson University for teaching excellence and was recognized as a Southeastern Finalist for Nursing Excellence in Teaching. In 2009, Ms. Atkins-Baylor successfully completed the requirements necessary to attain the designation of Certified Nurse Educator from The National League for Nursing.
