-- For its fall season, the Simpich Showcase Marionette Theatre will play host to a life-size lion, stork, fox... a much larger-than-life grasshopper and ant... and other characters in Aesop, an unusual mixture of the ancient writings of a Phrygian slave known by this name.
First presented by puppeteer David Simpich in the late '80's, this original production by Simpich was his first solo performance and one in which he desired to celebrate and, at times, rethink, the beloved animal stories read to him as a child. "I decided to actually become a part of the action of the show in the roll of the escaped hunchback slave. It not only allowed for a unique story concept, it was a way of inviting the audience 'back stage,' so to speak, to observe the process of creating live puppet theatre."
The action of the play takes place as the slave is hiding out in the forest and befriends a hypochondriac lion, who begs the slave's assistance in removing a thorn from his paw. Together they observe the shenanigans of a number of woodland creatures and the embittered slave gradually gains a unique, "four-footed" perspective on the foibles of mankind. Simpich's original storyline carefully blends and overlaps over ten of Aesop's fables including The Lion and Mouse, The Grasshopper and the Ant, The Frog who asked for a King and The Moon and her Mother.
Aesop is being presented between parts one and two of Simpich Showcase's 2012 Dickens Festival. The celebration commemorating Charles Dickens's Bicentenary will resume November 14 with Simpich's original production of A Christmas Carol.
