February 06, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Some recipients of Social Security Disability have the desire to work; however, many fear that in looking for a job, they will compromise their federal benefits. Fortunately, there are ways to work without risking the loss one's Social Security Disability status.

The Ticket to Work program is an employment program for those with disabilities who are interested in actively participating in the workforce. The goal of the program is to offer individuals receiving disability benefits a variety of choices when seeking assistance to enter, reenter or maintain employment. The program also aims to increase the financial self-sufficiency of recipients with disabilities, reducing one's dependence on benefits.

Who is eligible for the Ticket to Work program?

Individuals ages 18 through 64 who receive Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income benefits are eligible to participate in the program.

Participation in the program

To participate, a benefits recipient must make an agreement with an employment network or state vocational rehabilitation agency. Employment networks are under contract with Social Security to provide services to disability recipients under the program. These network providers will work to develop an employment plan that meets an individual's needs.

Specifically, the plan will help define one's specific employment goals. Furthermore, agencies will provide career counseling, occupation placement and ongoing support services. A person may also work with a State Vocational Rehabilitation agency.

A State Vocational Rehabilitation agency helps recipients who want to return to work but need greater assistance and services before they begin. When one chooses to receive services from a vocational agency, the Social Security Administration presupposes that the individual is using the Ticket program. In other words, a person is protected from medical disability review while he or she pursues gainful employment.

While participating in the program, one can safely explore work opportunities without losing disability benefits. Participants can also utilize a combination of work incentives to increase their income. Ultimately, the program aids disabled persons in better supporting themselves.

It is not easy to live with a disabling condition. Fortunately, some individuals can find ways to proactively participate in the workforce, despite their circumstances. The Ticket to Work program is available to help one transition into the working world.

If you suffer from a disability but you are interested in employment opportunities, contact an experienced Social Security Disability attorney today. A lawyer can inform you about the details of the Ticket to Work program.
