/24-7PressRelease/ -- Songas takes natural gas from the ground, processes and cleans it using a dedicated facility. It is then transported to Dar es Salaam via a 225 kilometre pipeline for electricity generation at the company's Ubungo power plant, the largest gas-fired power station in East Africa. Songas' facility generates 180 megawatts of electricity thanks to six aero-derivative turbines. This amount of power caters for approximately 30 percent of Tanzania's electricity needs.
Christopher Ford, Managing Director at Songas, indicates that the project has not only been a success for the company, but has also saved the public money and boosted Tanzania's economy. "We are extremely competitive in pricing and are very proud of the benefits we have been able to deliver to Tanzania," he says. "Economically, it is estimated we have saved the country in excess of two billion dollars by avoiding liquid fuel."
One of Songas' strategies going forward is to implement international best practice in all of its operations.. " We are always trying to develop our staff, develop the performance in our company and try to improve in all areas," notes Ford. "We are trying to increase the standards of operations and management within the energy sector."
In 2009, Songas decided to formalise its extremely strong operational guidelines and standards by implementing ISO:14001 and ISO:18001 accreditation. As Ford explains: " Those are standards, which if applied correctly, can really bring advantages to the business. If you set yourself targets and asses yourself against those, then you can work out strategies to continually develop and improve."
