Harmful chemicals found in children's products like toys, diapers, eating accessories, and clothing have parents searching for new, safer alternatives for children and the environment.
Many children's products are made with plastic containing harmful chemicals and dyes that contaminate children when they use them to play or eat with. However, through research and growth for a cleaner environment, there are many new products that are BPA and Phthalate free - chemicals found in plastic and potentially harmful, and organic products like the use of organic cotton and bamboo.
The following are ways parents can find products that are safe for their child and eco-friendly.
1. Green Toys: Children of all ages love to play with toys. The younger the child the more likely they are going to put the toy in their mouth, or after playing with the toy put their fingers in their mouth. This is how an infant and toddler learn and explore. Through research, we are finding that the plastics and dyes used to create toys and their vibrant colors are harmful to us in many ways. When our kids are playing with these toys they are ingesting the chemicals at a high enough amount to cause cancer and other problems.
Green toys are toys that are free of chemicals like BPA and Phthalates. Green toys are also made from 100% recycled post-consumer recycled products, and there are not any additional coatings on these types of products to eliminate possible lead contamination. Thus making it safer for children to explore at will.
2. Natural and Organic Products: When products are made from natural fibers like cotton, silk, bamboo, and many other types of plants, we conscientiously live in a cleaner environment. When a product is labeled "Organic", it means there are not chemicals placed on the product; it is generally handpicked, and is not planted with GMO seeds.
There are many products available in natural organic fibers for children. Cloth diapers, for example, are made from cotton, organic cotton, soy bean, and bamboo. These materials offer a safe way to diaper a child, and to keep harmful chemicals, like the ones found in many disposable diapers, off a child's skin. Using cloth diapers also reduces diaper rash and ingestion of chemicals from disposable diapers. Clothes also come in organic cotton, bamboo, and soy bean- providing an ultra-soft, chemical free way to clothe your child. Children also need eating utensils. There is a variety of chemical free utensils. Some are made from Bamboo. Other accessories like bibs and cups are also made from Bamboo.
3. BPA and Phthalates Free: Finding products that are free of BPA and Phthalates chemicals, commonly found in plastic, are essential in providing a cleaner, safer product for a child. Many children's products from toys to Sippy cups, bottles, diapers, plastic utensils, potty training potties all contain plastic that may have these harmful chemicals in them. It is important to look for products that announce on their packaging that they are BPA Free and/or Phthalates Free. Most children's items today come with safe plastics and dyes.
