According to Zap Lasers, the OrthoLase is the first diode laser designed for orthodontists. It can be used for a host of orthodontic procedures accompanied by a topical anesthetic without any bleeding, swelling, recession, or pain.
The use of lasers in dentistry was introduced in 1997, when the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), who works closely with the American Dental Association (ADA) and other dental institutions, approved the erbium YAG laser for the treatment of tooth decay. Dental lasers have come a long way since then, and new niche technologies are being implemented for specialized practices as
dental lasers evolve.
Zap Laser's Web site records the FDA's approval of over twenty orthodontic procedures using dental lasers. These include: biopsies, exposing unerupted teeth, fibroma removal, frenectomy, frenotomy, gingival troughing for crown impression, crown lengthening, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, gingival incision/excision, hemostasis, implant recovery, drainage of abscesses, diseased/infected/inflamed/necrosed soft tissue removal, soft tissue curettage, leukoplakia, operculectomy, oral papillectomies, pulpotomy, root canal therapy, reduction of gingival hypertrophy, sulcular debridement, treatment of canker sores/ulcers/oral mucosa, and vestibuloplasty.
