December 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Any Chicago area citizen knows how quickly an automobile accident can occur. The range of damage or injury after an accident is large and can include only minor property damage, bodily injury or even death. Common injuries include those to the back, neck or head areas.

Brain injuries in vehicle accidents

Statistics from the Family Caregiver Alliance report that motor vehicle accidents are the cause of 28 percent of the traumatic brain injuries registered. For brain injuries that are serious enough to result in hospitalization for the patient, a total of 49 percent were caused by auto accidents.

The role of alcohol in car accidents that result in traumatic brain injuries, fatalities or both is also noted in the records from the FCA. Records show that an average of one person is injured in an alcohol-related crash every two minutes. That averages to 321,000 people injured.

Per data from 1996, 41 percent of the motor vehicle accidents that led to deaths in which alcohol played a part, traumatic brain injuries were sustained. Alcohol also was a factor in seven percent of all collisions that resulted in TBIs that year.

The picture in Illinois

Records from the National Highway Transportation Safety Association for the year 2011 indicate that 278 out of 918 traffic fatalities were due to alcohol. Data from the Illinois Secretary of State for the same year show an even higher rate with 323 out of 918 deaths attributed to alcohol. Between those two records, the instance of lives lost to alcohol in a crash is between 30 and 35 percent.

Further data from the NHTSA show that in 64 of the fatal crashes, the measured blood alcohol content of the driver was greater than 0.15 percent. Additionally, all fatalities that happened with a driver who had a prior DUI on record involved a driver with a BAC of more than 0.15 percent.

In Cook County specifically, the NHTSA reports that 83 people lost their lives in alcohol-involved wrecks out of a total of 234 deaths for the year as a whole. That is a total of more than 35 percent of all auto-related deaths in the county.

Awareness and professional help are important

The importance of being aware of dangers while driving is always great. However, diligence and defensive driving cannot always prevent an accident. When you or someone you know is involved in a car accident, especially if it involves a driver arrested with a DUI, you should always seek legal help.
