-- Hofstra University Continuing Education, a top sports broadcasting school
on Long Island, NY, has added an intermediate sportscasting course for teens to its list of Summer Sportscasting programs for 2013. The course is offered in addition to the existing introductory courses available to both teens and adults. Intermediate Sportscasting for Teens, which takes place July 22-26 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., is designed for teens who have already taken the introductory course and want to continue to increase their sportscasting knowledge and skills.
The program focuses on the concept of "backpack journalism," in which the students are instructed on how to report, shoot, edit and appear on camera in a field report. The program creates an atmosphere where students who aim to pursue further journalistic goals are encouraged to develop their own unique writing style and "voice." Instructors will guide students through the production of in-depth stories about the latest in sports news, controversies and human interest stories. Students will receive insight into the various roles that exist within the staffing of a sports broadcast and the potential career options in the field of sports broadcasting
Ed Ingles, former WCBS Radio Sports Director and professional-in-residence at WRHU (Radio Hofstra University), coordinates the program, bringing in guest speakers and instructors who are well-known in the industry. Previous guest instructors have included Mike Breen, John Discepolo, Len Berman and Kenny Albert.
