December 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Any San Francisco resident that has been involved in a motor vehicle accident knows how quickly they can occur. Some can be minor as in the commonly referred to fender bender while others can be severe and result in injury or even death. Back injuries, neck injuries or head injuries can often be sustained during a car crash.

Predominance of brain injuries in car crashes

According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, 28 percent of all traumatic brain injuries result from motor vehicle accidents and 49 percent of all brain injuries serious enough to warrant hospitalization were caused by car wrecks.

The Family Caregiver Alliance also reports that there are more than 321,000 injured in alcohol-related accidents--an average of one person every two minutes. While the statistics paint a picture of an injury that occurs often, they do not relate the total cost of the injury to the person involved in the crash or to that person's family.

Rate of fatalities in drunk driving accidents

Statistics from the National Highway Transportation Safety Association for 2011 show that there were a total of 2,792 deaths that resulted from motor vehicle accidents statewide. Of those, 28 percent or 774 were from accidents in which alcohol was a factor.

In the city of San Francisco specifically, seven out of a total 30 fatalities for the year were attributed to the involvement of alcohol in the crash.

San Francisco's response

Law enforcement in San Francisco takes drunk driving seriously and records from the Department of Motor Vehicles that track arrests from 1997 to 2007 show a consistent effort to crack down on this problem. In 2007, 863 out of every 100,000 licensed drivers were arrested for driving under the influence. Specific details include:
- There were 203,866 DUI arrests in all.
- Felony DUI arrests totaled 6,264.
- Misdemeanor DUI arrests totaled 197,602.
- From the date reported, 153,348 of the 203,866 people arrested had been convicted.

Specific programs during holiday times or other select times in addition to regular vigilance can help to keep all motorists safe.

Your rights matter

If you or someone you love is involved in an automobile accident caused by a driver who is arrested for a DUI, seeking legal help is an important step for you, especially if any injury has occurred. Working with an experienced attorney is the best route for you to ensure that you are properly protected and compensated.
