March 07, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that nearly 2 million people suffer from a traumatic brain injury in the United States annually. Side effects of a traumatic brain injury can include severe headaches, problems with memory and concentration, dizziness and blurry vision. In most cases, it is believed that the effects of these injuries are temporary and will subside. However, a recent study conducted by the University of Oklahoma suggests that this is not necessarily the case.

After studying 500 veterans who were injured in Afghanistan or Iraq, researchers found that almost half of those who suffered a traumatic brain injury on the battlefield still showed symptoms for years afterward. A significant number of patients studied reported feeling the effects of a TBI up to eight years after the original injury.

The causes and effects of traumatic brain injury

Although most people who suffer from a traumatic brain injury have not been in combat, their injuries can be just as serious. Traumatic brain injuries can occur whenever someone suffers a jolt, blow or bump to the head, as well as when an object pierces the skull and enters the brain. Common causes of traumatic brain injury include falls, violence, sports accidents and motor vehicle accidents.

People who suffer from traumatic brain injuries can suffer from a host of serious side effects that can affect them physically, emotionally, and cognitively.
- On a physical level, traumatic brain injuries can cause problems like seizures, dizziness, nausea, serious headaches and blurred vision. In some cases, the brain injury may be so serious that it can lead to Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease or dementia.

- On an emotional level, people who suffer from a traumatic brain injury may become depressed or experience anxiety.

- On a cognitive level, traumatic brain injuries may lead to problems with concentration and memory, as well as problem solving abilities.

If you have suffered from a traumatic brain injury

The results of the University of Oklahoma study highlights the importance of getting good care after suffering from a traumatic brain injury, which can be very expensive. In some cases, treatment can cost anywhere from $600,000 to about $2 million.

If you or a loved one suffered a traumatic brain injury because of the negligence of someone else, contact a personal injury attorney for more information about legal avenues that could hold that person legally responsible. You may be able to receive compensation for your medical bills, pain and suffering and lost wages if you are successful, and an attorney can advise you of your rights and let you know what you need to make a successful case.
