Uc Irvine Extension Gears Up For Sixth Annual Gifted And Talented Education Webinar Series

Free Weekly Webinar Series Designed for Teachers, Administrators, and Parents of the Gifted
IRVINE, CA, January 08, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The University of California, Irvine Extension will hold the sixth annual "Gifted and Talented Education Webinar Series" beginning Thursday, Feb. 6 and running through Thursday, Feb. 27. As the gifted and talented education (GATE) curriculum continues to evolve, its teaching methods change as well. Each year, the series informs teachers, parents and administrators of these methods and how they can help the GATE community overcome the challenges they face. In addition to presentations, the webinar series also offers educators the option to receive credit for all webinar session attendance.

"At this free annual webinar series, attendants are provided with very useful tools on how to understand the attributes of gifted learners," said Angela Jeantet, director of UC Irvine Extension's Education Programs Department. "There tends to be different emotional characteristics tied to the gifted. Educators who stay informed of the latest teaching techniques and strategies for success will be more equipped to meet the needs all of learners regardless of level."

The free webinar series has been developed for teachers, administrators and parents of the gifted. Led by several leading GATE educators and professionals, feature presentations will include:

The Gamification of Education - (Thursday, Feb 6 from 4-5 p.m. PST) - This webinar will harness the principles of games design and examine the technology tools that will help create motivating and engaging learning experiences.
The New 3 R's for GATE: Augmented Reality, QR Codes, Virtual Reality - (Thursday, Feb. 13 from 4-5 p.m. PST) - This session will explore an exciting new educational tool. With a cell phone or tablet, augmented reality adds a new layer onto what students normally see.
Discourse and Collaboration: Skills for the 21st Century - (Thursday, Feb. 20 from 4-5 p.m. PST) - Productive and collaborative discussions are substantial to learning. This session will emphasize the strategies, structure and management of discussions among various disciplines, as well as student accountability.
Social and Emotional Needs of the Gifted Child: What Parents Want to Know - (Thursday, Feb. 27 from 4-5 p.m. PST) - This webinar will cover the characteristics, misunderstandings, goals and objectives for supporting the development of gifted children. The session will provide answers on how their gifted personality traits affect the social, emotional and educational areas of their lives.

To receive one quarter unit of credit from UC Irvine Extension, participants must attend all four live webinars (a total of four hours). A three-page reflection paper written by the participant is required to receive credit. This reflection must summarize what was learned from each webinar and how they will apply such material to their teaching methods.

Participants must also submit a one or two page lesson plan that highlights strategies from a single webinar. This must be submitted before March 27, 2014. The one unit of credit can be applied toward the UC Irvine Extension Gifted and Talented Education Specialized Studies online program. Credit will not be given for watching recordings of the webinars.

Known for its exceptional GATE programming, the UC Irvine Extension Gifted and Talented Education Specialized Studies program provides options with focused professional development sessions, individual courses and entire certificate programs aligned with the California Association for the Gifted (CAG), the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and state standards for excellence.
