VENTURA, CA, October 23, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- What started as the Ventura College Foundation's weekend Marketplace for shoppers to purchase fresh produce and other goodies from vendors, has grown into a one-stop community resource. The year-round open-air market provides free booth space on Saturdays to any county nonprofit, providing shoppers with access to vital nonprofit services and healthcare. ---
The Ventura County Health Department sets up mobile clinics each quarter, and through the end of the year they will have a manned booth every Saturday to explain Covered California, a statewide program where residents can choose affordable, quality health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act. This month, the Marketplace was the site of the annual Bi-National Health Week's health fair, a partnership between the U.S. and Mexican governments.
"The Marketplace has evolved into a great resource for both our vendors and customers," said Norbert Tan, executive director of the Ventura College Foundation. "It's a place where we are contributing to the economy, workforce development, community engagement, neighborhood vitality, and, of course, to students and the college."
Revenue from the space rentals at the Marketplace, located at Telegraph and Day roads, helps the Ventura College Foundation fund many programs including the Textbook Lending Library and the Ventura College Promise. Since 1985, the Marketplace has raised more than $10 million in program support.
