RICHMOND, VA, October 19, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Virginia Veterinary Medical Association (http://www.vvma.org/) (VVMA) has announced the release of a podcast discussing holiday risks for pets. Dr. Mark Finkler, DVM, owner of Roanoke Animal Hospital and president-elect of VVMA, provides advice for pet owners on ways to keep pets safe during the holiday season. In the podcast, Finkler notes that many holiday foods and candies, such as chocolates and artificial sweeteners, as well as decorations such as tinsel, can be hazardous to pets. In addition, he explains that increased household visitors and colder winter weather should be taken into consideration by pet owners during the holidays.

The podcast is available for download here, http://bit.ly/S3cbZ7.

QUOTES:
"Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas can be an exciting time for families and pet owners, but many of our favorite foods and decorations can be hazardous to our furry companions," said Dr. Finkler. "It is incredibly important during this time of year that pet owners be mindful of things around the house that could harm their pets, including chocolate, ribbons and wrappings, poinsettias, and tinsel, as well as considering the cold weather and increased foot traffic around the home. We should try to make the holidays a great time of year for families and pets alike."
