-- The Corporal Christopher Kelly Willis Foundation (the "Willis Foundation
") announces its 8th Annual Warrior Ride. This year's ride will take place Thursday, September 12th, through Sunday, September 15th.
The ride commences in New Buffalo, MI, and travels through South Haven, Holland and then travel to Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek where Corporal Willis is buried. The riders continue to Bronson Park in Kalamazoo where the riders will stop briefly to be joined by our 'Last Leg' riders who will travel with the Warrior Riders to the Kalamazoo Country Club. At the Kalamazoo Country Club a reception for the riders, families, guests, and service members will be held at 1pm.
Proceeds from the ride will benefit the Willis Foundation's long- term program to fund college scholarships for children whose parent has died while serving in a combat zone (or whose parent has been permanently disabled in a combat zone).
This year's recipients are Staff Sergeant Mark H. Schoonhoven's children and step-children: Nickolus Ramsey Schoonhoven, Anjelika Schoonhoven, Ava Schoonhoven, Sylvia Loffer, Forrest Loffer and a child that was dependent on Staff Sergeant Schoonhoven, Sheista Perry. Staff Sergeant Schoonhoven, of Fort Carson, Colorado (formerly of Plainwell, MI), joined the Army in 2006, serving as a motor transport operator for the 32nd Transportation Company, 4th Infantry Division. His parents, Deb and Harry Schoonhoven, reside in Kalamazoo, MI. Staff Sergeant Mark H. Schoonhoven passed away on January 20, 2013 as a result of injuries suffered in Kabul, Afghanistan, leaving behind the 6 children above who will be honored with scholarships at the close of this year's annual Warrior Ride.
