/Worldwide Who's Who/ -- Patricia Saunders Nixon, DMA, Assistant Professor of Voice at Norfolk State University, has been named a Worldwide Who's Who Professional of the Year in Music Education. While inclusion in Worldwide Who's Who is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Who's Who membership.
Dr. Nixon has taught the visually and hearing impaired, multidisabled, middle school, high school and college students. She has taught kindergarten through grade 12 at the Virginia School for the Deaf, Blind & Multi-Disabled at Hampton. She has 34 years of experience as a Music Instructor, which includes teaching voice, piano, organ, braille music notation, vocal literature, music theory and music appreciation. She also part of the Graduate Music Faculty at NSU. Mrs. Mary G. Saunders, her grandmother, was an influence to her as a child when she became the first voice teacher to her and her two sisters. She also provided the means for her to obtain piano lessons. Dr. Nixon performed with her sisters, as the Saunders Sisters, in church and at other community events. She sang in the Elementary, Middle and High School Choirs. She attributes her success to God.
Dr. Nixon received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from Shenandoah University Conservatory; a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from Norfolk State University; and a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education with a concentration in Voice and Organ from Norfolk State University. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and the National Association of Negro Musicians. She performs with The Virginia Opera Guild and Legacy of Weyanoke. She is a board member of the Virginia Symphony Education Department. In 2011 & 2012 she received the Regional AKA Award for photograpy. She was also the recipient of the Black Educators Award from Delicados, Inc., the Area II NAACP ACT-SO award for Classical Vocal Performance, and the NANM Eastern Region Award for Promoting Black Musicians and Black Music.
