LOS ALTOS, CA, May 28, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Public speaking instructors and coaches generate public speaking evaluations for their students' speeches on regular basis. These evaluations are sometimes called public speaking assessments, speech assessments, speech critiques, speech analysis presentation assessments, or presentation critiques. Rate Speeches estimates that over a million speech evaluations and presentation evaluations are generated every year by tens of thousands of public speaking instructors, coaches, and other professionals. In addition, millions of reviews of speakers or speeches are filled by speech and presentation attendees. Yet, little research has been done on public speaking evaluations and reviews.

Communication studies scholar, professor, and author, Dr. Joseph A. DeVito shared vital speech evaluation recommendations for public speaking and presentation skills instructors. DeVito also provided essential speech review techniques for speech and presentation attendees and judges. Lastly, DeVito offered crucial advice for the speakers or recipients of speech evaluations and speech reviews, to maximize the benefits from the feedback.

One of the speech evaluation recommendations offered by DeVito is: "The feedback analysis should begin with the level the speaker is on and the goals of the instruction." Furthermore, DeVito cited research by Paul King, Paul Schrodt, and Jessica Weisel identifying four characteristics that an evaluator should keep in mind and that define effective feedback, namely, to make the evaluation useful, sensitive, confidential, and remembered.

Among the speech review techniques presented by DeVito are: being positive, focusing the comments on the speech rather than the speaker, being specific, and being constructive. DeVito then made suggestions about the type of language to use in speech reviews: "use I-messages in which you [the reviewer] take responsibility for your criticism—beginning your comments with 'I thought' or 'From my point of view' or 'My feeling.'" DeVito further explained: "Using I-messages will also prevent you from using 'should messages,' which almost invariably will create defensiveness in the speaker."

Speakers receiving speech evaluations or speech reviews can benefit from feedback by evaluators and reviewers by first assuming that the criticism is valid and discovering the reasons behind the critic's reaction to the speech. Recipient speakers will also find it useful to listen with an open mind, to understand the feedback or speech analysis, and to not take criticism personally by considering negative comments as directed towards their speeches rather than themselves.
