Drawing upon more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. McLaren currently serves as Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Epidemiology, School of Medicine, at the University of California, Irvine. She initially joined the university as a Professor in 1998.

During 2013-2017, Dr. McLaren served as an equity advisor for the university. In this role, she was responsible for reviewing the requirements for hiring new faculty and planning with regard to equity for underserved minorities and women. At the present moment, Dr. McLaren serves as the interim director of the Biostatistical Shared Resource for the Chao Family Cancer Center at the university, as well as the co-director of the cancer center Program in Cancer Control.

Prior to pursuing a scientific career, Dr. McLaren attended San Jose State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, with distinction, in 1969. She went on to receive a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education from Stanford University in 1970 and a Master of Science in Mathematical Statistics from Case Western Reserve University in 1976. During the next seven years, Dr. McLaren served as a research biostatistician with the Department of Biometry at Case Western Reserve University while pursuing a PhD in Biostatistics, which she received in 1983. Upon completing formal education, Dr. McLaren was invited to attend a meeting of the International Committee for Standardization in Hematology, where she presented her research in this area.

Dr. McLaren was previously named Minnesota College Science Teacher of the Year by the Minnesota Academy of Science and Minnesota Science Teachers Association. Dr. McLaren maintains involvement with numerous statistical organizations. In 1990, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. She is also a recognized Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) for which she served as a former editor of the ASA and chair of the Council of Chapters Governing Board. From 1990-91, she was the President of the Red River Valley Chapter of the ASA. She has also been highly involved in the International Biometric Society (IBS) and served as President of the Western North American Region of the IBS in 2006. She has been recognized as a statistical consultant with the International Committee for Standardization in Hematology (ICSH) since 1986 and has served on subcommittees on Qualitative Cellular Hematology and the Blood Count of the ICSH. A recognized presenter in the area of biostatistics, Dr. McLaren has contributed numerous articles to professional journals pertaining to her areas of focus.

Dr. McLaren collaborates with her husband, a physician who specializes in hematology and oncology, in the area of iron metabolism. Together, they supervised enrollment of over 20,000 primary care patients in the Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Screening (HEIRS) Study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Currently, with funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the NIH, they serve as Principal Investigators for a study of genetic modifiers of iron status in participants with the genetic disorder, hemochromatosis.

Throughout the course of her career, Dr. McLaren has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including the 4th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, which was published in 1997. In the coming years, Dr. McLaren intends to work toward securing more grant support that will support her research and to continue her collaborative efforts in the Department of Epidemiology with the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Irvine.
