Mr. Lau began his career as legal assistant at Fallon, Bixby & Cheng, now Fallon, Bixby, Cheng & Lee, in San Francisco, CA, from 1993 to 1994. He served as a law clerk with the Office of the General Counsel at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, in 1997 and assistant to the general counsel at the Office of the General Counsel at Yale University from 1997 to 1998. From 1998 to 1999, he was an associate with Fletcher, Tilton & Whipple, P.C., in Worcester, MA. Following this appointment, he worked for Flynn & Clark, P.C., in Cambridge as a senior associate from 1999 to 2012. Mr. Lau was an adjunct faculty member at New England Law, Boston from 2013 to 2017, and managing partner at Clark Lau LLC in Cambridge since 2012.

Prior to embarking on his career, Mr. Lau received a Bachelor of Arts in political science, cum laude, from Yale University in 1993. Following this achievement, he earned a Master of Arts in higher education administration from the Lynch School of Education at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA, in 1997. He concluded his education with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Boston College Law School in Newton, MA, in 1997. Mr. Lau was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1997 and to the Federal District Court of Massachusetts in 1999.

In addition to his career, Mr. Lau has been a United States Department of Labor liaison since 2012 and the vice chair since 2017. He has also been a presenter at a number of conferences and panels, including the American Immigration Lawyers Association New England chapter Continuing Legal Education Conference in 2005, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association Regional Conference in 2009, the Federal Bar Association Immigration Conference in 2015, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association Annual Conference on Immigration Law in 2018, among others. Mr. Lau is a regular contributor of articles to professional journals and co-authored "Whose Organization is This? Institutional Liability for Student Organizations" in the National Association of College and University Attorneys Annual Conference proceedings in 1998, was updating author of "Adjustment of Status for Beginning Practitioners" in "Navigating the Fundamentals of Immigration Law" for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 editions, and co-editor of "Advanced Immigration Practice: Agency Updates and Expert Strategy" in 2009, among a number of other publications.

Mr. Lau is a member of the Asian American Lawyers Association of Massachusetts and served as director and co-chair of the community service committee from 2006 to 2010. He also belongs to the American Immigration Lawyers Association and some of his roles have included co-chair of the young lawyers' division from 2002 to 2003, co-chair of the ethics committee from 2003 to 2004, and member of the National Department of Labor liaison committee since 2013. He is also a member of the New England chapter, where he sat on the executive board from 2009 to 2013, and the Rome District chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. He has been on the board of directors of the Kendall Square Association since 2016 and a board member of the Boston College Law School Alumni Association since 2017. Mr. Lau has previously been selected for inclusion in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, the 37th edition of Who's Who in the East, and multiple editions of Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in America.
