An esteemed and determined figure in her field, Ms. Mitchell has excelled as a transactional lawyer and principal of Amy E. Mitchell, PLLC since 2004. Practicing entertainment law from Austin, Texas with a focus on music, television, and film issues, she reviews, structures, and negotiates deals in the entertainment industry for emerging artists, entrepreneurs, and established figures in the performing arts. In this position, Ms. Mitchell has operated as legal counsel for dozens of independent narrative films and documentaries and has served as outside music counsel for the PBS music television program Austin City Limits for more than a decade.

Ms. Mitchell views her entertainment lawyer role as helping creative professionals bring their visions to life while receiving the credit and compensation they deserve. She strives to educate her clients so they can make informed decisions now and in the future. Ms. Mitchell credits her own education as a lawyer primarily to her long-term relationships with Christian L. Castle Attorneys, a small international music law boutique firm, and with film and fair use attorney Deena Kalai.

Before embarking on her professional legal path, Ms. Mitchell attended the University of Texas at Austin, from which she earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, with a minor in French, between 1995 and 1999. Through her work at the Texas Music Office, Ms. Mitchell gained an appreciation for the business side of the music industry and decided to pursue a career in music law. She attended the University of Texas School of Law, graduating with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 2004, the same year in which she became licensed to practice law in Texas. As a law student, Ms. Mitchell was active as president of the Women's Law Caucus, staff editor for both the Texas Intellectual Property Law Journal and the Texas Entertainment & Sports Law Journal, vice president of the Intellectual Property Law Society, a Teaching Quizmaster, and musical director for the law school a cappella group. In 2003, she was thrilled to return to London, England to study abroad at University College London where she took coursework in media law, comparative human rights law, international air and sea law, and the law of cultural property.

As an attorney, Ms. Mitchell quickly became a leader in numerous entertainment law endeavors throughout Texas. Most notably, she has served for more than ten years on the Council for the Entertainment & Sports Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, including the role of Chair from 2016-2017. She also founded the Austin Bar Association's Entertainment & Sports Law Section in 2013, which she chaired for four years. In 2017, the State Bar of Texas tapped Ms. Mitchell to be the inaugural director of an entertainment law "bootcamp" to be held in conjunction with the state's annual Entertainment Law Institute. This Entertainment Law 101 program has recently completed its fifth year with Ms. Mitchell at the helm.

She has thrived with her published works as well, having authored articles for the Entertainment & Sports Lawyer, Austin Lawyer magazine, the Texas Bar Journal, and the Entertainment Law 101 program. She has also co-authored materials that were presented through the SXSW Music and Film Festivals and the Entertainment Law Institute. Ms. Mitchell has further maintained a highly visited educational website, AskaMusicLawyer.com. Ms. Mitchell plans to devote more time to writing in the coming years and will be releasing various digital products aimed at helping both aspiring entertainment lawyers and creatives on EntertainmentLawMama.com.

When she is not practicing law, Ms. Mitchell enjoys spending time with her husband and three young children, traveling, learning languages, watching offbeat comedies, caffeinating, and making music. In fact, Ms. Mitchell has performed as a vocalist, keyboardist and/or arranger for myriad ensembles around Austin since 1996, including Conspirare, The Pennybackers, 'Til We're Blue or Destroy, The Bar & Grill Singers, Lila Lies, Panoramic Voices, UT's Ransom Notes, the Longhorn Singers, and Will Taylor's Strings Attached, among others.

Shortly thereafter, she was honored as a Texas Super Lawyer in 2020 and 2021. She was additionally selected for inclusion in Austin Monthly's Top Attorneys List in 2021. Attributing her success to her persistence, the influence of her mentors, and her ability to rise to the occasion whenever and wherever she is needed, Ms. Mitchell hopes to propel her non-traditional practice forward and cement her legacy as a highly-skilled and compassionate figure in her discipline.
