'Enjoy Traditional Tortillas' at the Barcelona Carnival

Tortilla-making competitions, parades and dancing all await those staying in Barcelona in February.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, December 17, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In the same way that Brits celebrate shrove Tuesday before the countdown to Easter, Spanish people also mark the beginning of lent with a special Barcelona Carnival.

Anyone staying in accommodation in Barcelona in February who is upset that they will miss their pancakes next year might be pleased to know that they can join in the country's annual celebration instead.

As with most festivities in Spain, people take to the streets and the city comes alive with colour and noise for the Gran Rua de Carnaval parade.

However, instead of sweet pancakes covered in ice cream, strawberries and lemon, people enjoy tortillas, which are traditionally made on Jueves Lardero, or Fatty Thursday.

Similar to the UK, this marks the beginning of a time when people indulge in the pleasures they will be sacrificing in the run-up to Easter, such as special spicy sausages.

"Fuet and salchichon will have picante explosions dancing on your tongue - you'll wish you had been born in Catalonia just for the pleasure of sampling them every day," What's on When explains.

Anyone who thinks they are a dab hand at making tortillas can participate in one of the many competitions which challenge people to make the Spanish omelettes.

In the UK, Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends the day before Easter Sunday.

If you're heading to the Barcelona Carnival this year, we strongly advise that you book your hoteles en Barcelona as soon as possible, given the huge popularity of the event.
