Caldereros Fiesta 'Remembers the Gypsies' of San Sebastian

One noisy festival in San Sebastian celebrates the gypsies who used to pass through the city.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, January 09, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When staying at hotels in Bilbao, visitors may be provided with more than one opportunity to party Spanish style, as the country is known for its love of fiestas and celebrations that can last well into the night.

If they are looking to get away from the dreary British weather by booking a holiday at the beginning of February, then there is one event that may take their fancy and encourage them to investigate what is going on in the region.

On February 6th, the nearby city of San Sebastian hosts the Caldereros Fiesta, which remembers the Hungarian gypsies who passed through the area in days of yore.

As with many Spanish festivals, there is a theme to this annual event and it is one of the nosier celebrations in the country.

Also known as Tinker's Day, it sees people dress up to the nines in traditional gypsy attire and use hammers to bang pots and pans making all kinds of racket.

This represents the traditional actions of the gypsies, who used to make a din to proclaim their services as they arrived in San Sebastian.

Another historic event taking place in the region is St Aguenda's Day in Bilbao. This occurs on February 4th and dates back many centuries.

Choirs, many of which are made up of children, fill the streets with songs and people dress up in traditional costumes to witness the spectacle.

If you're heading to the Caldereros Fiesta this year, we strongly advise that you book your hoteles en Bilbao as soon as possible, given the huge popularity of the event.
