Celebrate 'The Freedom of Saragossa' with Cincomarzada

Spaniards celebrate the expulsion of Carlist troops from Saragossa with the Cincomarzada festival.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, January 09, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Much of Spain is steeped in history and this is no different in Saragossa , which is the capital city of Aragon and a candidate for the European Capital of Culture in 2016.

In true Spanish style, one of the major events in the city's history is commemorated with a festival, as it seems that the country cannot resist the chance to throw a great party.

People staying at hotels in Saragossa on March 5th can take part in Cincomarzada, which is one of the city's most important celebrations.

It commemorates the expulsion of Carlist troops from the area by the townspeople back in 1838. Following this, the constitutional council declared the date as a national holiday and it is now officially marked on an annual basis.

Although the official commemoration disappeared in 1843 when a new party came into power, local people renounced the decision and it was properly revived in 1981 by the local council, with help from festivity commissions, groups of friends and civic associations, the area's tourism website explains.

Nowadays people flock to the Tio Jorge Park to enjoy a meal and some drinks in the sun. As with many Spanish festivals, they also use the event as an opportunity to dress up in all their finery and really celebrate their heritage.

Jessica Reading, head of marketing for LateRooms, commented: "Demand for Cincomarzada is always significant and we recommend that anyone considering attending should book their hoteles en Zaragoza as early as possible."
