British Boarding Schools Witness Increased Diversity Amongst International Students

According to British boarding school Alexanders International School, students are privy to a lot more than just learning about life in England.

SUFFOLK, ENGLAND, January 27, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Life in a British boarding school has been revealed to be both cultural and cosmopolitan with the release of enrollment figures from the previous two academic years.

The Suffolk-based international school has welcomed over 70 nationalities over the past 25 years and the trend looks set to continue into the future. French students still hold a majority of places, despite the number of students from directly across the Channel dropping from 37% in 2007-08 to 23% in 2008-09. The popularity of British boarding schools among French students is explained by the high standard of English-language tuition available at the facilities and also the close proximity of the countries. Interest has risen among both Chinese (with a 3% rise in 2008-09 to 16%) and Russian (with a 2% rise in 2008-09 to 13%) students, although the greatest increase has been among Kazakh students, who have increased their numbers from 8% in 2007-08 to 12% in 2008-09.

There are also numerous Japanese, Korean, German, Spanish, Italian, Ukrainian, Polish, Greek and Thai students who are looking for the best boarding school UK to realise their academic potential. Students attend Alexanders from throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East, ensuring an international education with high academic standards and the experience of a different lifestyle. Regarded by many students as the first step to university in the UK, British boarding schools build academic knowledge and prepare students with the right grounding to successfully complete IGCSEs or A Levels, as well as Cambridge exams.

School principal Alister Laidlaw comments: "We are conscious that part of our job in preparing young people to move on to schools, colleges or universities in the UK, is to give them confidence to cope with this potentially daunting experience", and adds that for the majority of students it is "their first experience of life in a foreign country." This means that a special understanding is fostered between staff and students, as the difficulties of coping with learning a language and adapting to cultural differences can be a challenge.
