Andie Day's Design for Life Home Renovation Featured on NECN's "The Dreamies"

    BOSTON, MA, February 11, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A North Shore home that was renovated by interior designer Andie Day to keep its elderly owner out of a nursing home and out of harm's way has been chosen as one of NECN's top six dream homes of the year.

Though the small North Shore home was renovated for less than $250,000 in under 13 weeks, it was featured alongside multi-million dollar homes, some of which took years to complete.

The renovation was designed so that an elderly widow could live fully and independently in her own home. This meant, among other things, installing a curbless shower to reduce the dangers of entering and exiting the shower, an induction cook-top that shuts off on its own, and energy-efficient LED track lighting throughout that leads the occupant to either the bathroom or an exit in the dark. Hallways and entryways were widened to make the home wheelchair accessible.

In addition to creating an environment that would be a safe place for an elderly woman with memory problems to live by herself, Andie wanted to create a home that would be energy efficient. The induction cooktop allows for the safest mode of cooking with its auto turn-off feature, and replaces a dangerous gas range. Bearing in mind that the homeowner would often forget to turn off her faucets, Andie installed electronic faucets to prevent flooding. These faucets typically save over 1,000 gallons of water per year. New kitchen cabinetry and energy efficient appliances were installed to reduce bending and straining on the homeowner's back and joints.
