Popular for Sacramento Patients After Weight Loss, Arm Lift on the Rise in 2009

While there are no national statistics for plastic surgery after weight loss, a rise in arm lift procedures in 2009 suggests that more people who have lost weight are having surgery to remove excess skin, say Drs. David Kaufman and Christa Clark.

FOLSOM, CA, June 19, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) compiles statistics and publishes a report about the plastic surgery procedures that were performed the year before. According to Dr. David Kaufman and Dr. Christa Clark, co-directors of Kaufman and Clark Plastic Surgery in Sacramento (www.afterobesity.com), a rise in arm lift procedures in 2009 mirrors the growing popularity of surgery to remove excess skin among their Sacramento weight loss patients.

In 2009, the ASPS states that 14,505 arm lifts were performed in the United States - this is an increase of 3% from their 2008 statistics. While an increase of 3% may not seem like a lot, it's actually a significant jump in a year when cosmetic surgical procedures as a whole were down 9% from the previous year.

"I think we can use arm lift statistics to estimate general trends in weight loss surgery in Sacramento. You see, most arm lift patients pursue the procedure because they have lost a significant amount of weight, resulting in excess arm skin. These same patients often have multiple surgeries to remove excess skin from other parts of the body," says Dr. Kaufman.

Losing weight is a great accomplishment that gives people the opportunity to live healthier, more active lives. Unfortunately, many people who lose a significant amount of weight are left with unsightly excess skin. Plastic surgery can remove excess skin and refine body contours for these people.

"We offer a number of Sacramento cosmetic surgery procedures to help men and women who have lost a significant amount of weight eliminate sagging skin from their midbody, chest, thighs, and arms" says Dr. Clark. "Many of our patients have more than one problem area, so we often recommend a combination of procedures to achieve a full body makeover."

Almost all men and women who lose a significant amount of weight are left with excess skin around their torso, so Drs. Kaufman and Clark often recommend that their patients target their midbody first. Procedures like panniculectomy, tummy tuck, and lower body lift can help weight loss patients reshape the abdominal area. From there, procedures like arm lift, breast lift, and thigh lift can be performed according to the patient's goals and the surgeon's recommendations.

"Many of our post-weight loss patients suffer from rashes that are caused by the excess skin, and some experience lower back and shoulder pain," says Dr. Clark. "Choosing Sacramento body contouring to remove excess skin can help reduce or eliminate these problems as well."

"We're pleased to see that more and more men and women who have lost weight are refining their results with plastic surgery," says Dr. Kaufman. "For us, it's truly rewarding to help people who have worked so hard to get healthy enjoy the body they've always dreamed of. They deserve to look their very best."

Dr. David Kaufman and Dr. Christa Clark (www.afterobesity.com) are board-certified plastic surgeons focusing on a wide range of facial and body contouring procedures, including plastic surgery after weight loss. Dr. Kaufman served as a US Navy SEAL before earning his medical doctorate from Harvard Medical School, while Dr. Christa Clark earned her medical doctorate from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. Both Dr. Kaufman and Dr. Clark trained extensively through general and plastic surgery residencies at Stanford University.
