Local Dentist Explains How Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) Can Lead to Several Dental Problems

Bergen County NJ Dentist, Dr. Sherzoy, says a visit to the dentist every 6 months will prevent many dental issues you may have, even help with your existing dental complications.

BOGOTA, NJ, August 06, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A serious dental issue that affects the teeth is bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding. Bruxism does not usually cause harm, but when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis it makes the teeth become damaged and other oral health complications can arise. For nearly 20 years, Dr. Sherzoy is known to be a talented dentist who has helped patients solve their problems with bruxism to prevent any problems in the near future.

Teeth grinding and clenching, more commonly referred to as bruxism is an involuntary action, usually occurring at night and done by millions of people in America. Although there are many possible causes, the main one appears to be stress and anxiety. In the morning, the sufferer may wake up with several symptoms, including a throbbing headache, neck, shoulder and jaw pain. In chronic teeth grinding cases one may result in a fracturing, loosening, or loss of teeth. The chronic grinding may wear their teeth to stumps, in result to this; bridges, crowns, root canals, implant, dentures may be needed.

Since grinding often occurs during sleep, most people are unaware that they grind their teeth. However, a dull, constant headache or sore jaw is a common symptom of bruxism. Many times people learn that they grind their teeth by their loved one who hears the grinding at night. Dr. Sherzoy says, "During regular visits to our office, the teeth are examined for evidence of bruxism - often indicated by the tips of the teeth appearing flat. If symptoms are present, the condition will be observed for changes over the next several visits before a treatment program is established."

Bruxism mouth guards are very efficient, because it helps prevent additional teeth damage or tooth loss. The bruxism mouth guards protect the crown, enamel, implants and bridges of teeth. They help keep the teeth apart to avoid grinding and clenching. Custom-fit night mouth guards are available only from the dentist's office. Sherzoy will measure the size and check the contours of your mouth. These items cost a little higher than the ones bought at pharmacies but are certainly the better choice.
