Improved Screening and Treatment for Severe Myopia

Japanese findings may improve the treatment for patients of severe nearsightedness.

FRESNO, CA, October 08, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A recent Japanese study done at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University found several different factors that may increase the risk of severe myopia and other serious eye ailments. Researchers believe these findings may increase screening and treatment for patients with severe myopia.

The study looked at the medical records of over 400 individuals who had severe myopia for over 12 years. It was found that over 40% of these patients had myopic maculopathy that became worse over the years. Myopic maculopathy is an abnormality caused when the eyeball is too long for light rays to focus on the retina. They hit in front of the retina, which worsens myopia.

Researchers believe that the findings show the age, degree of nearsightedness, length of the eye and an abnormal bulging at the back of the eye's surface are all important factors that affect how severe macular maculopathy will be. The results may also show which patients will have eyes that progress to more serious diseases.

"A link between myopic maculopathy and vision loss is a very important find," says Dr. W. Andrew Maxwell of Fogg, Maxwell, Lanier & Remington EyeCare and a member of eyes.com. "It should help us identify which of our patients should be monitored for increasing myopia so we can increase their treatment."
