Tarps Plus Helps in West Sumatra Recovery Efforts

The large tsunami that hit the West Sumatra area left people stranded and homeless needing tarps and shelter. The leading American tarps supplier has been sending shipments to help out in the relief efforts.

PALMDALE, CA, November 19, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On October 25, a very large tsunami pounded several of the Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra. An earthquake that struck just south of the small island with a magnitude of 7.2 was the cause. However, there was no warning, and only a few even realized it was coming until the three meter wave was seen coming. Now, as people are recovering in shock, supplies such as food, water, clothing, and items such as the tarp desperately needed.

The wave killed at least 300 people, while more than 400 are still missing, and hundreds were seriously injured. Those who are left behind are dealing with the fact that their island is mostly destroyed. It is estimated that more than 80% of the homes are a total loss, and many are not only homeless, but missing loved ones as well. Recovery efforts are well underway, but the going has been difficult and slow as many areas are still under a lot of water.

This beautiful location was home to a popular surfing resort. Thousands of surfers flocked to the area yearly to enjoy the amazing waves that made the spot so popular.

Many guests felt the earthquake when it first occurred and moved as quickly as they could into upper levels of homes and higher land areas. The wave came, just as they knew it would, and it was devastating, flattening entire villages and ripping apart roads. Many charter boats were docked on the island, and several of these were damaged, one burning and resulting in a total loss as a result. A simple tarp enables people temporary shelter. After the damages many people were requesting poly tarps because they are waterproof.

The GM of Tarps Plus, Angelina Urquardt, stated, "Our tarps are in high demand and the types vary, so after storms so we always keep a large supply of poly and canvas tarps."

Those who are involved in the relief effort have seen how extensive the damage to this island actually is. They are asking for donations, whether monetary, or in the form of food and supplies. The tarps are in high demand to protect damaged structures and also offer protection for those who have lost their homes.
