Cole Design Group Recognized for Sustainability Initiatives in Work for Northeast Utilities

Mohawk Fine Papers Inc has recognized Cole Design Group of Canton, Connecticut for its recent sustainability initiatives.

/24-7PressRelease/ - COHOES, NY - October 01, 2006 - Cole Design Group's work on the Northeast Utilities 2005 Annual Report has earned them the Mohawk Windpower Partnership Award. By choosing to print the annual on Mohawk Options, a paper from Mohawk's Windpower Portfolio, Cole Design Group helped to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "Cole Design Group is contributing to a significant movement among businesses of all sizes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Their specification of Options is a step toward correcting and protecting our environment for the future," says Joseph O'Connor, Sr. Vice President Sales, Corporate Accounts.
"A single action can make an impact, as the true difference will be made by customers who are willing to try, one order at a time," he added. The difference Cole Design Group has made is significant, as is evidenced by the environmental calculations listed below.

Environmental Savings achieved by COLE DESIGN GROUP
132,332 pounds of 30 % PCW Mohawk Options - manufactured with Windpower

Savings derived from using post-consumer recycled fiber in lieu of virgin fiber:
476 trees not cut down 41,960 lbs. atmospheric emissions eliminated
21,470 lbs. solid waste not generated 202,361 gallons water/wastewater flow saved
274,225,994 BTUs energy not consumed 1,376 lbs. waterborne waste not created

Savings derived from choosing a paper from Mohawk's windpower portfolio:
19,768 lbs. air emissions (CO2, SO2 and NOX) not generated

The fossil fuel equivalent for this amount of wind energy:
13 barrels crude oil or 3 tons coal (anthracite)

This amount of wind energy is equivalent to:
Planting 1,338 trees or taking 2 cars off the road for one year

— more —
Through Mohawk's current purchase level of 45mm kilowatt-hours of wind-generated electricity, it has offset 33,000 tons of CO2, which would have ended up in our atmosphere. "Our continued promotion of high recycled content paper will also remain the highest priority for Mohawk going forward as a means of taking pressure off forest resources," says O'Connor.

The Mohawk Windpower Partnership Award was launched nationally in 2006. This is one of many programs launched by Mohawk to raise awareness for corporate sustainability issues. A pioneer on the recycled front, in 2003, Mohawk became the first paper mill in the U.S. to use renewable, non-polluting wind-generated electricity for manufacturing. Mohawk's environmental calculator is another industry first: this online, interactive tool enables customers to calculate the savings achieved when they choose environmentally friendly paper. Mohawk is also the first U.S. paper mill to offer Green Seal-certified papers, and continues to offer the widest variety of Green Seal-certified papers available from one mill. Finally, Mohawk received the EPAs Green Power Leadership Award last year.
