Quilts, More than a Store-bought Blanket

Grandmother/Foster Mother knows that everyone can feel secured and loved when they have a quilt to wrap up in.

/24-7PressRelease/ - TOPEKA, KS, October 13, 2006 - My best friend has made quilts for all of my grandchildren and over twenty foster children in the last four years as well as many family members and charity fund raisers. She really enjoys making quilts and creates between 75 and 100 design quilts per year. These are not quilts to just look at and admire for their beauty... they are made to be used and loved by the recipient... not something you would admire for it's beauty and workmanship and stick into a closet forgotten. Let me tell you about the process that goes into making one of her design quilts.

You might think that it all begins with the patterns and fabric... well yes it does, but not by simply going to a store and purchasing a pattern or fabric. Each child or family member has been allowed to choose their own fabrics and patterns. This is an individual's quilt, it is not something simply bought in a store from a manufacturing line. The fabrics and patterns must be something that captures the individual's own tastes and imagination, making it truly a personal treasure.

Sometimes the child or person receiving the design quilt is even involved with the quilt's creation-by drawing a shape, or even sewing a simple seam. What matters is that the recipient understands that this quilt is lovingly put together especially for them. Even if the person can't be a part of the fabric or design selection process itself, this is one aspect that makes design quilts so special... it is a creation of love and caring.

My friend is creating a legacy of love and caring through her design quilts. The children and family members will remember her and the special times together selecting scraps of fabric, putting the quilt together. The charities and others that receive her beautiful quilts will remember the feeling of love and security they felt during a trying time in their life or when curled up with a good book or watching TV - warm, snug and very cared for.

As a foster mother of more than twenty children in the last four years I can tell you of the emotional impact these quilts have had on their disrupted lives, giving them something of their own and helping them to feel loved and secure when everything else has been torn away from them - family and possessions. I have also seen the impact on my own children and grandchildren that I have legal guardianship. However, these beautiful design quilts are for children/adults that already feel secure and loved as well. I've seen so much in the last few years of the wonderful impact of design quilts that I want to share with them with as many as possible, so they and their loved ones can personally learn this as well.
