Phyllis R. Coolen Honored for Excellence in Nursing Leadership

Phyllis Coolen complements her postgraduate studies at the University of Washington with 37 years of practical experience

OLYMPIA, WA, May 5, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Phyllis R. Coolen, Graduate Student at the University of Washington, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in nursing leadership.

A full-time Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) candidate at the University of Washington, Ms. Coolen brings to her studies 37 years of practical experience. She retired in February 2010 from the Department of Social and Health Services where, during the course of 25 years, she occupied several management positions, including program manager and director. Noted for her knowledge of community health, hospice and nurse management, Ms. Coolen currently works as a hospice nurse with Providence Sound Home Care and Hospice. She considers making a difference in the lives of the less fortunate to be the most rewarding aspect of her career. She attributes her success to her passion for patient care and the inspiration that she received from her mother, who was also a nurse.

Ms. Coolen earned a Master of Science in Nursing in 1981 from the University of Washington. She looks forward to earning a Doctor of Nursing Practice, at which point she aspires to attain a teaching position in either Hawaii or Washington state. She would also like to conduct research on indigent health care.

Ms. Coolen co-wrote "Overdose Deaths Involving Prescription Opioids among Medicaid Enrollees," which was published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report in 2009 by the Centers for Disease Control. The article may be accessed at: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5842a1.htm.
