Pat Vittuci Views Retirement Yesterday vs Today

Pat Vitucci, a Bay Area Independent Financial Advisor, sends us a reminder that retirement planning today is far different than it was several years ago.

WALNUT CREEK, CA, June 29, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pat Vitucci, a Bay Area Independent Financial Advisor, sends us a reminder that retirement planning today is far different than it was several years ago. "It used to be that people retired at 65, went on a cruise at 66 and died at 67. Those were the rules and everyone followed them." Those tongue-in-cheek remarks certainly didn't apply to everyone, but there is a bit of truth in those comments about how people viewed retirement planning a few decades ago. Many people worked for companies for a long time when pensions were commonplace. Workers could combine a pension with social security and that was enough retirement income to not have to work anymore. They were ...retired.

"Not so true today," continues Vitucci. "Now people are healthier and living much longer and leading very active lives. Many of us are just not ready to retire at age 65. Combine that with the fact that most companies simply don't have pensions anymore and social security is a shrinking asset. Consequently, people are working well into their 70s and even beyond...full time or part time. Is 70 the new 40? Maybe!"
