How Often Should My Child Visit the Dentist?

Once your baby's first teeth have erupted and you have taken them for that all-important milestone, the first dental visit, what happens next?

TORRANCE, CA, November 08, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pediatric dental checkups are recommended every six months; this will give your child's dentist a chance to spot any changes and note any early signs of possible problems. Even children who exhibit no apparent problems and appear to have healthy teeth and gums should see their pediatric dentist regularly, just as an adult should see their dentist on a consistent basis. Seeing children regularly and having detailed records readily available means that a children's dentist can foresee - and often prevent - issues before they become serious.

Another purpose of these visits is education, both for parent and child; visits with a specialized pediatric dentist give parents a chance to discuss oral hygiene and diet and other practices, such as thumb sucking, which might affect their child's oral health. Professional cleanings will also be given at each visit, supplementing the daily cleaning routine that is carried out at home.

There are a number of other things that may happen during a regular dental checkup. Possibly the dentist may request X-rays, especially if they suspect cavities; cavities too small to be noticed by the child may be detected with X-rays and treated before they are large enough to become painful. Additionally, a pediatric dentist is able to regulate fluoride levels, offering a fluoride application if needed and may recommend sealants to protect the teeth from bacteria and food debris.

"We are fortunate enough to have the services of pediatric specialists in our Torrance dental practice," says Alex Mascola of the Total Family Dental Group. "These dentists have specialized in children's dentistry and also in child psychology, so our youngest patients will feel comfortable and relaxed during dental checkups."

Your child's dental checkups are just as important as his / her regular pediatrician visits; starting good dental habits while your child is young will stand them in good stead for a lifetime.
