Exercise with Breast Implants

A common question among women considering breast augmentation is how the procedure will impact their ability to exercise.

PHOENIX, AZ, April 11, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A common question among women considering breast augmentation is how the procedure will impact their ability to exercise. As we become an increasingly active culture, regular exercise has entered the routines of a growing number of people. As a result, the ability to exercise is something you should discuss in detail with your plastic surgeon during your consultation to make sure your routine is not impacted.

Activities Impacted by Breast Augmentation

In most cases, you should not notice a significant difference in your normal exercise routine after breast augmentation. However, the size of your breast implants will certainly be a factor in how much your routine is affected. In general, the larger the breast implant, the greater the likelihood it will impact your ability to exercise.

Runners might notice a difference in their balance, and they may feel the impact of the increased weight around their chest. Wearing a supportive bra will help prevent you from experiencing a drop in speed or stamina.

Swimmers may find that it takes awhile to adjust to the changes in buoyancy and resistance caused by breast implants. If you swim competitively, you might notice a slight drop in your time.

Issues Experienced while Exercising after Breast Augmentation

You may experience certain issues while exercising with breast implants. These may include:

- Reaching across the chest - If you engage in athletic activities which require significant inward rotation at the shoulder with an extended arm, you might notice the presence of your breast implants. This is common when playing sports such as golf, tennis, or racket ball. However, unless your breast implants are very large, you will most likely be able to easily adjust to this by using your torso and waist more when making this motion.

- Additional weight of breast implants - This is particularly problematic for women who opt for a large increase in their breast size. Women with large breast implants may experience back, neck, or shoulder pain which can significantly impact them while exercising. If you lead a very active lifestyle, you should make sure to choose a more moderate implant size that will not cause these issues.

- Discomfort - This is a rare issue that is generally only experienced immediately following your breast augmentation and is usually associated with the soreness felt due to the procedure. This should subside over a few days. If discomfort persists, you may find relief by massaging the implant, taking over-the-counter pain medication, or using a more supportive bra.

- Lateral (side-to-side) displacement of breast implants - This can interfere with your arm's range of motion. You can minimize this issue by keeping the diameter of the breast implant smaller than the diameter of your natural breast. This will also help keep your results in proportion with the rest of your body.
