International Lao New Year Festival Comes to San Francisco

    SPLIT, CROATIA, April 27, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Lao New Year festival is one of the biggest Southeast Asian Festivals in the United States and is a100% volunteer based event. The festival is held the last Saturday of April and lasts from 10am to 5pm in the United Nations Plaza, close to several cheap hotels in San Francisco that put you within easy access to the events many festivities.

The Lao people observe their New Year Kut Songkaan or Pii May according to the ancient Hindu calendar and it is considered to be the biggest and most important, traditional festival in their country. The festival correlates with the end of their dry season, and the beginning of the monsoon season, which are honored as a time of rebirth and purification.

The festival promotes diversity, unity and honors the cultural heritage of all Asian people including those from Cambodia, Burma, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand and more that celebrate the Lao New Year. This year's festival will be packed with activities including the Miss Lao International Pageant, films and a variety of vendor booths. There will also be an Evening Gala, RSVP only with ticket at the Camelian, 1 Ferry Plaza in San Francisco. Admission to the Festival itself is free even though the entire event is staffed by non-paid volunteers. The event doesn't receive any funds from the government either so donations are accepted.
