Superior Restoration Advocates Disaster Preparedness in So-Cal

Disaster preparedness is proven to be the most effective way to survive a crisis. Superior Restoration educates families on how to prepare for a disaster by having a communications plan, all-purpose disaster kit, and knowing how to shelter-in-place.

CARLSBAD, CA, May 16, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Superior Restoration, a San Diego-based disaster cleanup company, is calling on Southern California residents to be prepared for emergencies, as disaster preparation has been proven to be the most effective way to survive a crisis. The restoration company is encouraging neighborhoods and families to prime themselves for crises by having a communications plan, putting together an all-purpose disaster kit and knowing how to shelter-in-place.

Speaking at a media event held on Wednesday, Superior Restoration President Gabriel Prieto said that most Americans are ill-equipped for a catastrophe of any type. Only 14 percent of Californians have made plans for what to do before, during and after a disaster. One in every five people has taken absolutely NO action towards disaster preparedness.

"Disaster preparedness is about priorities," said Prieto. "A disaster kit is a vital tool that's readily available to keep your family safe in a calamity. Making the time to create a disaster kit could save the lives of your loved ones."

Most components of the typical disaster kit can be easily found in the home; it just needs to be assembled and stored in an accessible place. Kits should contain water and food for each family member for 72 hours, a battery-operated or hand crank radio, first-aid kit, flashlight, extra batteries, manually powered can opener, a local map and personal hygiene items including toilet paper, moist towelettes and hand sanitizer.

According to Prieto, families also need to plan where to meet if they get separated during a disaster. Again, all family members should be included in creating this family disaster plan. Elderly persons, children, family members with special needs and pets may require extra planning to ensure that their needs are met. Families should practice this plan, said Prieto, and keep it current.

Here in Southern California, the most common types of disaster are wildfires and earthquakes. Both can be life threatening, but with adequate preparation losses and injuries can be kept to a minimum. In the case of a wildfire, it's always best to have an evacuation plan that each family member is familiar with. An evacuation plan may also be necessary for an earthquake, but it's also very important to know what to do during the quake (in a nutshell, stay calm, stay clear of things that might fall on you).

The American Red Cross cites home fires are the most frequent disasters that they respond to, and the most preventable. Having working smoke alarms on each level of a house and having family escape plans in place to help get each person out of the house are two simple safety measures homeowners can take to avoid tragedies.
