Three Things To Try Before Calling Basement Waterproofing Contractors

Water in the basement can cause problems with mold, musty odors and in finished basements damage to building materials like laminate flooring and insulation, but homeowners can make changes outside that may alleviate their water problems indoors.

MCCLOUD, CA, June 04, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When water gets in a basement, it can cause problems from mold and musty odors to structural damage and ruined drywall, insulation and laminate flooring. Serious cases require basement waterproofing specialists, but homeowners may be able to solve minor problems by making a few changes outdoors.

1- Check the foundation's grade. The top of the foundation should be higher than the surrounding area by half an inch per foot for at least 10 feet.

2- Erosion or settling may have affected the grading. Outdoor features like patios, sidewalks or pebbled driveways that do not have the recommended grading could also be allowing water to pool around the foundation.

3- Clean or install gutters and downspouts. These are essential for controlling the runoff from melting snow or heavy, prolonged rain. Failing to redirect the water means it may be sitting next to the foundation, saturating the topsoil and then seeping into the basement through gaps or cracks in the walls and footings. Downspouts may also need to be extended with lateral piping if they are not draining at least five feet away from the foundation.

4- Solve drainage problems with smart landscaping. The right landscaping elements like berms and swales can help direct water away from the house, but others might be causing the problem. For instance, shrubs and flowerbeds too close to the foundation may not allow enough ventilation and prevent water from draining properly.

If these recommendations fail to remedy the problem, it might be time to consult with a professional before water causes severe damage that requires sump pump installation or insulation contractors. McCloud, CA requires permits for certain home improvements and remodels, so always find out if a permit is needed and have utility lines marked before starting any project.
