Signs of Breast Augmentation Complications

Breast augmentation is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States.

MIAMI, FL, June 09, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Breast augmentation is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. Most women will not experience any complications following breast augmentation, but it is possible, and knowing the signs of complications can help you detect problems early on.

Possible Breast Augmentation Complications

Breast augmentation has the same potential complications as any surgery such as infection, excessive bleeding, and reactions to medications. These problems are easily detected and should show signs immediately following your procedure. Infection may occur up to six weeks following surgery at the incision site or within the breast tissue.

Symptoms of infection include pain around the incision area or discomfort, excessive heat, and swelling in the breasts. These symptoms should be brought to the attention of your plastic surgeon immediately.

Other possible breast augmentation complications and their symptoms include:
- Capsular contracture - when scar tissue compresses your implant, you may have symptoms including implant distortion and pain
- Asymmetry - when breast implants do not settle appropriately, your breasts may appear misshapen
- Implant rupture - trauma or implant age can result in rupture. With saline implants, your implant will deflate, but silicone rupture may require an x-ray to detect

Other complications may include interference with mammography, a loss of nipple or breast sensations, and hematoma.

Preventing Complications

There is no way to guarantee against breast augmentation complications, but there are some ways to reduce your risks. Working with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the first key to a successful, aesthetically superior, and safe procedure. In addition, implant placement may decrease your risks for some complications and the care you take your body after your procedure will play a definite role.

Taking time to follow all of your plastic surgeon's postoperative advice is the best way to prevent problems such as infection and can help ensure positive results from your breast augmentation procedure.
