On May 19, 2007 marathon enthusiasts worldwide get the chance for a unique and adventurous experience - running a marathon on the Great Wall of China. This year's version of The Great Wall Marathon involves 1200 contestants from numerous countries.

/24-7PressRelease/ - COPENHAGEN, DENMARK, May 17, 2007 - More than 2000 years ago the Great Wall was built in northern China as a defence against Mongolian barbarians. The Mongolians are no longer a threat, so why not employ some of the 6350 km of wall set in extraordinary surroundings for a 42.195 km run? With The Great Wall Marathon runners from all over the world are offered an extreme marathon experience combined with a visit to one of the world's most fascinating localities, the Tianjin Province of China.

Besides the historical atmosphere of the Great Wall, the marathon course takes the marathoners through picturesque villages, tranquil rice fields and the beautiful mountainous settings of the Wall. The Great Wall Marathon is therefore not only a long and tough run, but also an impressive journey through China's history, culture and nature.

42.195 km of running up and down the rugged steps of the Great Wall is demanding, but also rewarding. The Wall runs on the ridge of mountains in the beautiful and unspoiled Tianjin Province, which offers spectacular views, and of course the Great Wall is quite an attraction in itself. The Chinese heat, the thousands of steps, and ascents and descents of up to 10% make the course challenging, but with the right preparation The Great Wall Marathon is the perfect way to combine extreme running with a visit to a breathtaking Chinese region.

The runners are not the only ones in for adventures on this trip. Accompanying family members and fellow travellers can participate in an elaborate programme of cultural visits and in this way experience the mysticism and magnificence of China's past and present. The optional tours for spectators include pulsating Beijing with visits to e.g. the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Also markets and temple visits in the villages surrounding the Great Wall can be part of the tour. The Great Wall Marathonâ can only be purchased as part of a tour package combining the race with a number of different tour options.

In addition to the traditional 42 km course, The Great Wall Marathon offers half marathon as well as 10 and 5 km routes.
