With Summer Approaching Injury Attorney Warns Death Rate Up for Teen Drivers with Passengers

    LOS ANGELES, CA, June 09, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The recent AAA Study expands upon their 2009 study that show teen accidents were dropping. (See the 2009 story here.) Attorney Michael Ehline believes that with summer approaching, parents should be alerted to the new study that has been released, showing the death risks of teen drivers when they have other teen passengers in their motor vehicle. The study was released on May 8, 2012, and the data showed researchers that drivers 16 or 17 years old have a higher risk of being killed in a crash per mile driven increased with each additional young passenger. Attorney Ehline, of Ehline Law Firm PC, Los Angeles County, says that summertime means more kids are driving with other kids in the car. This new study means that parents really need to be vigilant and police their kids.

Data the researchers analyzed in their study was from the National Traffic Safety Administration. The data used focused on teen drivers that were killed and between the ages of 16 and 17. The study data was complied between the years 2007 through 2010.

One of the interesting factors that researchers found in analyzing data, was the risk of teen driver death decreases approximately 62 percent when there is an adult 35 years or older in the vehicle. The largest decrease in teen driving accidents when an adult is present in the vehicle is solo-vehicle crashes researchers said.

AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety President and CEO Peter Kissinger, stated that parents can help to make their teen drivers safer immediately, by refusing to allow them to have other young people in the car when the teen is behind the wheel. Kissinger said that parents should not allow their children to be passengers in other teen driver's vehicles to lower the risk of vehicle accident deaths in teens.

The research data backs up Kissinger's statements, by showing that a driver between the ages of 16 and 17 that drive with no passengers reduce the risk of being killed. The risk increased approximately 44 percent when the teen driver had one passenger that was under the age of 21.
