WASHINGTON, DC, June 22, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The day before Mother's Day, Shawnice Singletary, a mother of three, was shot in the neck while driving along Baltimore's Northern Parkway. Rescue crews and doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital saved her. Dr. Albert Chi attended to her first in the emergency room. He had the task of telling her the shooting left her a quadriplegic. Her courage inspired him and he has become personally involved in Shawnice's case. He recommended moving her to Specialty Hospital of Washington to begin her rehabilitation, and has put together a computer system for her to communicate.

The focus at the Specialty Hospital of Washington is to help Shawnice recover to the point where she will be able to breathe on her own. Dr. Manisha Singal, Chief Medical Officer at Specialty Hospital of Washington, says, "Our part of this partnership is to first liberate her from the ventilator. To get her off life support." The eventual plan is for Shawnice to be able to return home to Baltimore.

"The staff and doctors at Specialty have been nothing but professionals. I feel comfortable knowing that my daughter will be provided with the kind of services she needs so that we can take her back home to finish her recovery with the family," said Ms. Charlene Singletary, Shawnice's mother.

Dr Chi is now working on getting Shawnice a more advanced computer that can be used with just the movement of her eyes. That would allow her to communicate with her family and help her recovery and overall health. Specialty Hospitals of Americas, the parent company to Specialty Hospital of Washington, is collaborating on a challenge grant with John Hopkins to help make that computer a reality for Shawnice.
