Plastic Surgeons Comment on Teen Breast Augmentation

The doctors at South Bay Plastic Surgeons near Long Beach say plastic surgery can sometimes benefit teens and ultimately increase their self-confidence. They discuss the trend for breast augmentation among teenage girls.

TORRANCE, CA, August 04, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- This time of year, the doctors at South Bay Plastic Surgeons often see a rise in the number of young women seeking breast augmentation. For some high school grads from the South Bay and Long Beach, plastic surgery is even given as a graduation gift, and they schedule their procedures during the summer before heading off for college in the fall.

Dr. Charles Spenler, a board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 25 years of experience performing breast surgery, says he has seen some big changes over the years.

"It used to be fairly common for parents to give their children, particularly their daughters, rhinoplasty as a high school graduation gift," he says. "If a young lady longed for a more refined nose, the summer between high school and college was often a good time to do it.

"Of course, we still see a lot of nose jobs in this age group, but now girls are also coming to our practice in Torrance for breast augmentation."

Just like nose surgery, breast surgery can have a major effect on a woman's confidence and self-esteem.

"It's not something young women should rush into without giving it a lot of serious thought," says Dr. Lisa Jewell, one of the other members of the practice at South Bay Plastic Surgeons. "When a young woman comes in for a consultation, I sit down with her and ask a lot of questions about her motivation and her reasons for wanting the procedure.

"Honestly, sometimes I don't think breast augmentation is the right thing to do, and I'll tell her that. But there are other times when breast implants can do wonders for a young woman's confidence."

Dr. Michael Newman, who works with Dr. Spenler and Dr. Jewell at South Bay Plastic Surgeons, notes that breast reduction surgery can also be a great confidence builder for some young women.

"Most plastic surgeons in Los Angeles have seen teens with extremely large breasts who feel uncomfortable - even embarrassed - about their bodies," Dr. Newman said. "They've probably been the victims of a lot of teasing, as well.

"Breast reduction surgery can help bring about significant changes in these young women's lives. After breast reduction, they feel more comfortable participating in sports and other physical activities. They wear more stylish clothes and don't feel they have to hide beneath baggy sweatshirts. And overall, they just feel a whole lot better about themselves."
