Licensed Counselor Explains Why We Fear Success

Fear is a universal human emotion that can motivate and protect, or cripple and hold back. Jennifer De Francisco, a Newport Beach counselor, explains how fear of success can be just as limiting and debilitating as fear of failure.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA, August 04, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Fear of failure is a common problem, but many Americans find themselves also crippled by the fear of success. According to Jennifer De Francisco, a licensed couples counselor in Newport Beach, this fear can manifest itself in a variety of different ways, from dropping the ball on big assignments at work, to dating the wrong type of people. De Francisco wants to help California residents overcome and learn to deal with self-sabotage. She shares her insights in helping people understand some of the psychological underpinnings of self-sabotage and fear of success.

"Many behaviors are deeply rooted in childhood experiences," says De Francisco. "Parents that set their limits too high or are overly critical of their children during the formative years cause their children to develop self-punishing attitudes and behaviors. The fear of success can also develop as a form of rebellion against harsh parental standards."

Low self-worth can also be a cause of fear, De Francisco says. Without the proper confidence many people fail to ever attempt anything for fear of failure. They may believe that there is no point in trying because their efforts will never be enough. De Francisco also explains that some success, especially professionally, can actually increase anxiety that can lead to self-sabotage.

"Believe it or not, some people experience success as very frightening once they have met some of their goals," says De Francisco. "For example, an achievement at work can lead to increased expectations or being awarded more difficult assignments. Feeling anxious and stressed at the possibility of failing to met other's expectations can lead to self-sabotage."
A self-defeating person is so convinced of their ultimate failure, De Francisco adds, that they fail to celebrate in their achievements along the way.

Research has shown that many of these causes of self-sabotage are operating at an unconscious level. This can make this condition very difficult to overcome, which is why therapy is often required to alleviate the problem. Proper treatment can help individuals understand the root causes and develop healthier attitudes and behaviors.
