Wright & McGurk Cautions Consumers That Anti-Depressant Meds Could Cause Birth Defects

Wright & McGurk Law cautions consumers that taking anti-depressant SSRI medication while pregnant has been linked with instances of birth defects in children.

IRVINE, CA, October 26, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Wright & McGurk Law would like to caution consumers that taking your anti- depressant medication while pregnant could cause serious birth defects. According to the FDA, mothers taking anti- depressant SSRI medication during pregnancy could experience 1 to 2 times greater the risk of giving birth to a child with birth defects, and 6 times more likely to be born with persistent pulmonary hypertension.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates 17 million Americans take prescription SSRI anti-depressants, a part of an estimated $11 billion industry. SSRI anti- depressants include the FDA approved drugs Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro , Luvox, and Viibryd.

Recently, a study published in the May 2, 2012 American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology concluded that among women who took SSRI's during pregnancy, there were significant chances of premature births and seizures. Examining just under 229,000 pregnancies between 1999 and 2007, researchers determined the risk grew higher for fetuses later in the pregnancy term.

In January 2012, a study published in the British Medical Journal reported that third trimester use of a SSRI anti- depressant doubled the risk of having a child born with PPH. These results are similar to a 2009 study in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology which reports triple the risk of heart defects in babies born to mothers taking SSRI anti-depressants while pregnant.

Because of much confusing information surrounding SSRI anti- depressant medications, many mothers are unaware that taking their prescription medicine during pregnancy could produce children with birth defects. According to a recent Annals of Internal Medicine study, 50% of women taking prescription drugs during pregnancy were unaware that these drugs could cause birth defects because they had not been warned about the potential side effects and complications that getting pregnant while on the drugs could cause.

Mothers want to do the right thing for their children. When what they thought was right turns out to harm the child's health, this can be a heartbreaking situation. If your child has been born with birth defects that may be attributed to your SSRI anti- depressants, call our firm today for a free consultation.
