Plastic Surgeon in New York City Sheds Light on New Survey

Dr. Elliot Heller, a plastic surgeon in New York City and Manhattan, suggests that his patients be a part of the government's efforts to tighten regulations of cosmetic interventions and procedures.

NEW YORK, NY, November 02, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Due to the recent PIP breast implants scandal, the government has initiated a review of regulations that is calling on the help of the public.

The Department of Health is requesting patient input regarding cosmetic procedures and interventions. Dr. Elliot Heller, a plastic surgeon in New York City and Manhattan, would like his patients to participate.

The PIP scandal involving defective breast implants containing industrial strength silicone spurred a review to be conducted for the Department of Health. A team of professionals led by Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, medical director of the National Health Service, is heading the review.

"Even though plastic surgery is typically for cosmetic reasons, it's still a surgical procedure," says Heller, a top breast surgeon. "Many important factors are often over looked by patients prior to going under the knife."

Surgeons should be qualified enough to carry out procedures, and the products used should be regulated. Additionally, clinics should favor hospitals, being capable of providing proper and efficient care to patients during and after surgeries.

Advertisement is another aspect of the industry that puts depressed and budgeting patients at risk. Empty promises of hope or "deals" used as bait urge them to action before they have reflected on the importance of their decision.

"Restricting these areas means improved safety for surgery patients," says Dr. Andrew Miller, who performs facelifts in Manhattan. "This is the people's opportunity to make a difference in how the cosmetic surgery field is regulated."

The review will examine the following:
1- Safety and government of products used in cosmetic procedures
2- Government of provider qualifications
3- How to ensure organizations are capable of caring for patients during and after procedures
4- What information is most beneficial in assisting patients to make informed decisions
5- How to improve complaint process
6- Propose a national implant registry for implants and other medical devices

People wanting to participate in the "call for evidence" can fill out the online submission form on the Department of Health's site.

All experiences are important in helping us "learn what works best," says Keogh.
